Mental illness comprises a wide range of disorders and varies in its severity. The effect of mental illness can be severe on the individuals and families concerned and its influence is far-reaching for society as a whole. Around 7.3million or 45% of Australians aged 16–85 will experience a common mental health related condition such as depression, anxiety or a substance use disorder in their lifetime according to the 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing.
This highlight the important need to create community awareness about identifying the early signs of developing mental health issues, learning how to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis and to know of local mental health services and support systems available.
You will learn:
Skills in how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems;
Knowledge of the possible causes or risk factors for these mental health problems;
Awareness of the evidenced based medical, psychological and culturally responsive methods of treatment available;
Skills in how to give appropriate initial help and support someone experiencing a mental health problem;
Skills in how to take appropriate action if a crisis situation arises involving suicidal behavior, panic attack, stress reaction to trauma, overdose or threatening psychotic behavior.
